Configuring your email address on Android

In this article you'll find a step by step explanation on configuring your email address at TransIP on your Android device.

Haven't created an email address yet? Get started right away with our Web Hosting and Email Only services. Read the article 'Creating a new email address' for more information.

This article uses images and steps for a Samsung device, using Android 9.0. Keep in mind that not every Android device uses the exact same user interface.

Although most Android devices are pretty similar, this could mean that some images or steps may be slightly different if you're using a different Android device.

If you're having trouble configuring your email address with the information in this article, please contact our support team. Make sure to send a few screenshots of the steps you're taking and don't forget to mention which Android device your're using.

To use email with our Web Hosting and Email Only services, your domain name needs to use the correct DNS records.

If your domain name uses the TransIP settings, we will automatically take care of the DNS for you. If you want to configure the DNS yourself, make sure to add the MX, TXT and CNAME records for your Web Hosting or Email Only service.

Configuring your email address on an Android device

There are several ways to start the configuration on an Android device. First, open the Email app on your smartphone.

    • If you haven't conifugred an email address in the Email app yet, you will be asked to set up an email address.

    • If you've already configured an email address in the Email app, head over to 'Settings' in the app, followed by 'Add account'.

    • Another way to add an email address is by going to the 'Settings' of your smartphone. From here, head over to 'Accounts', followed by 'Email' and 'Add account'.

Either way, the window 'Set up Email' will be shown. Head over to Step 1 to proceed.

    Step 1

Because you're going to set up your own email address, tap 'Other'.

    Step 2

Enter your email address and password and tap 'Sign in'.

    enter email address

Can't remember your password? Use the steps in the article 'Changing the password of your email address' to set a new one.

    Step 3

    Tap 'IMAP account'.

    choose imap account

    IMAP or POP3?

In our example we're using the IMAP protocol to set up the email account. This protocol is widely used as it leaves a copy of an email on the email server. This allows you to set up and use your email address in different email clients simultaneously.

The other option is the somewhat outdated POP3 protocol. When using POP3, email will be downloaded directly from the mail server, without leaving a copy. Although some email clients allow you to leave a copy on the mail server when using POP3, this protocol mostly forces you to use one email client.

Read the article 'The difference between IMAP and POP3' for more information.

If you still want to set up your email account using the POP3 protocol, use the POP3 settings supplied in the article 'The email settings at TransIP'.

    Step 4

Enter the settings for your email address.

    • Email address: Enter your email address.
    • Username: Enter your email address.
    • Password: Enter the password of your email address.

Next up are the settings for the Incoming server.

    • IMAP server: Enter imap.transip.email
    • Security type: Choose SSL.
    • Port: Enter 993.

    • SMTP server: Enter smtp.transip.email
    • Security type: Choose SSL.
    • Port: Enter 465.

Finally, enter your email address and password again.

Now press 'Sign in' to complete the configuration of your email address.

Some Android devices will let you choose additional options for the email account or may ask to enter the name of the email account and the sender.

Afterwards, you will have succesfully configured your email address on your Android device.
