What is the difference in usage of CentOS 8 and AlmaLinux 8?

TL;DR: There's no real difference in usage between CentOS Stream 8 and AlmaLinux 8.

In 2020, Red Hat announced that CentOS 8 will no longer be supported after the end of 2021 and will be replaced by CentOS Stream.

Migrating CentOS 8 to AlmaLinux 8 is relatively easy, but after the switch, or after (re)installing to AlmaLinux, do you notice any difference in usage compared to CentOS 8? The answer to that is no. Just like CentOS 8, AlmaLinux is a 1 on 1 binary compatible fork of Red Hat Enterprise Linux 8. All commands you've grown familiar with using CentOS 8 (such as using dnf) work the same way in AlmaLinux. In this, nothing has changed.

CentOS 8 and AlmaLinux are so similar to one another, that you can perform an 'in place migration' from CentOS 8 to AlmaLinux 8 without any issues. This even applies if Plesk, DirectAdmin or cPanel are installed on top of it. Of course, not all scenario's have been tested by the AlmaLinux developers and there's a chance that specific (obscure) compiled software is not yet supported. When in doubt, contact the developer of specific software you use, or simply create a snapshot of your VPS prior to migrating to AlmaLinux 8.
