Upgrading CentOS 8 to CentOS Stream 8

In 2020 Red Hat announced that CentOS 8 will no longer be supported after the end of 2021 and will be succeeded by CentOS Stream.

Various alternatives for CentOS 8 are available. For example, you can upgrade your existing CentOS installation to AlmaLinux. Another alternative is to upgrade CentOS 8 to CentOS Stream 8. This can be done using the following two commands (reboot afterwards):

    dnf swap centos-linux-repos centos-stream-repos
    dnf distro-sync

Please note that there is a difference between CentOS Stream and AlmaLinux. AlmaLinux takes the traditional place of CentOS and CentOS Stream that of Red Hat Enterprise Linux in the Red Hat landscape. See our article 'What is CentOS Stream' for more information.
