What is a premium domain name?

A premium domain name is a domain name which, as the name suggests, has more 'value' than a regular domain name. As a result such domain names are more expensive than regular domains. This can occur with older extensions but is most common with new gTLDs.

These premium domain names are often very generic words or (company) names, for which the registry charges a different and often more expensive price than indicated in the original proposition. This can sometimes be hundreds of euros per year more expensive.

The registry of the extension in question determines which domain names are considered 'Premium' domain names. Unfortunately we have no influence on this.

There are two types of premium domain names:

    • Domain names with older extensions and a generic name, such as for example travel.com, which have been registered for years. Because these already have built up a lot of 'value' they are more costly to register or transfer.
    • Domain names that use new gTLDs with a very generic term or company name that has not yet been registered, but which the registry expects will become 'valuable'. In the latter case, the registry that offers this extension will often charge a much higher registration- and renewal price than would be the case with older extensions. Examples of such premium domain names are for example gold.watch or healthy.club.

Characteristics of a premium domain name

Premium domain names often have the following characteristics:

    • The domain name is short
    • The domain name is easy to remember
    • The domain name is easy to spell
    • The domain name is generic
    • The domain name is related to a product or company and therefore has a high commercial value
    • The domain name is in the language of the associated extension (TLD)
    • The domain name corresponds to the name of a place such as a city for example

    Registering a premium domain name

After you order a premium domain name, you will see the following error message in your control panel:

"Invalid attribute value; premium domain name. Please accept premium price!".

In that case please read the following article that explains which steps you can take: "I get the error message 'Premium domain name' when registering a new domain name"
