    What is AlmaLinux

In 2020, Red Hat announced that CentOS 8 will no longer be supported after the end of 2021 and will be succeeded by CentOS Stream, see also our article 'What is CentOS Stream'.

In response, some spiritual successors have emerged that are taking the place of CentOS 8 in the Linux landscape. The major players are AlmaLinux and Rocky Linux. AlmaLinux, like CentOS 8, is a one-to-one binary compatible fork of Red Hat Enterprise Linux 8. You can almost think of it as a clone of CentOS 8 and you won't notice any difference in use.

AlmaLinux was developed by CloudLinux and is supported by the open source community for which the AlmaLinux Open Source Foundation has since been established.
